Accessibility

Usable by everyone who registers, and everyone who hosts

We aim for the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at level AA across the registration pages, personal pages, the live room, emails and the dashboard. Here is what's been done, what we know falls short, and how to tell us.

What's been done

Keyboard
Registration, personal pages, the live room and the dashboard work from the keyboard, with a visible focus ring. Every page starts with a “Skip to content” link, and dialogs keep focus inside until they close.
Labels and structure
Form fields have labels, buttons and icon-only controls have names, tables have captions and header cells, and each page has one main landmark and headings in order. Messages that appear after an action are announced to screen readers.
Contrast
Text and controls use one set of colour tokens, chosen for AA contrast on their backgrounds; a check (npm run check:tokens) fails the build if they drift from the design system's. A host's brand colours are adjusted before use so text on them stays readable.
Motion
Animations are reduced or turned off when your device asks for reduced motion.
Email
Emails are real text (not images of text), in the event's language, with a plain-text copy alongside, and links that say where they go.
Language and layout
Pages declare their language (event pages and emails in the event's), and layouts reflow to a phone's width rather than scrolling sideways.

Known gaps

Where we know we fall short today.

No outside audit yet

We check pages with the keyboard and the token check as we build, but no independent audit has been done, so we don't claim conformance and don't publish a VPAT. When one is done, this page will say so.

What hosts put in

Images hosts upload, their event descriptions, slides, recordings and streams are theirs. Uploaded images don't yet ask for alt text, and captions on a video are whatever its service provides.

Graphics and QR codes

Share cards and event graphics are images. Their words are on the page beside them, and every QR code has its link written out, but the images themselves don't carry all of it.

Video on other services

Calls and streams that play inside the live room (YouTube, Vimeo, Zoom and the rest) are those services' players, with their own accessibility. Live captions depend on the host turning them on there.

Charts

Some dashboard charts show their numbers only on hover or as shapes. The same numbers are in the tables and exports beside them.

Tell us about a problem

Something you couldn't do, read or reach? Write to support@programmable.you with the page and what happened. A person reads every message. If you need an event's details in another form (plain text, large print), say so and we'll ask the host.
